Tristan is a gender-neutral name of Celtic origin. Derived from the French word "triste," it means "sad" or "melancholy." In Arthurian folklore, Tristan was a legendary character who fell in love with an Irish princess called Iseult. While their romance didn't last, the name Tristan endured and is now a popular choice for baby boys and girls. Actor Chris Hemsworth brought the name into the spotlight when he called one of his twin sons Tristan in 2014.
