The story behind the name
If you were in Spain, Portugal or much of South America, you’d hear the name Fernando, a form of the German Ferdinand, everywhere you go. It became known in 16th-century England, when the queen of England married the king of Spain. In the US today, its status as a popular boys' name reflects the rise of the Latino population. It gets its adventurous streak from “faro” (“journey”) and “nand” (prepared”). Holding fast to his name’s meaning is superstar Formula One race car driver Fernando Alonso.
