The story behind the name
Every parent thinks the world of their baby, so a name that literally translates to greatness and gorgeous is certainly apt! A surprising name affiliated with Augustus is the Greek version, Sebastos, which became the more commonly known Sebastian over the centuries. From Austin to August and the female counterpart Augustine, there are several similar names that fall within the realms of this splendid title. Augustus originated as a title given by the Roman Senate to the first Roman Emperor, Octavian, the adopted son of Julius Caesar, in 27 B.C. and adopted by him as a name. In the U.S., Augustus reached a high of Number 175 in 1880, fell off the list in 1970, then made a return appearance in 1991, and is now on the rise once more.
