The story behind the name
Sawyer is a gender-neutral occupational name of English origins, meaning “woodcutter.” The name originally found fame in Mark Twain’s Adventures of Tom Sawyer, as an ever-mischievous and adventurous little boy. Sawyer also received a revival in the noughties thanks to the eponymous character in the cult TV series Lost. Sporting a relaxed and friendly feel, Sawyer is also a familiar surname, with American broadcaster Diane bearing the last name. Celebs have also become smitten with Sawyer over the years as Steven Spielberg gave the name to his little one.
